Why is it that the people who've never actually done PvP comment on PvP the most? Haven's combat was really fun in world 7 (and, more controversially, in world 6). Some also consider early w10 (pre-IP cost removal on defenses) combat to have been great. Please don't have an opinion just for the sake of having one, without having it based on experience.
Come now, you can't really expect people not to form opinions about things just because they have not done them. I think that in answer to your question, it boils down to the inaccessibility of PvP, or the general feel of inaccessibility to it. Due to the games grinding nature and stat reliant combat coupled with high risk to our hearthlings/stuff results in a fear of even ever attempting PvP, and this in itself is an issue. People are dissatisfied by what is essentially their own lack of prowess and belief in their ability to compete in the spooky side of haven that is PvP.
In my opinion havens issue all across the board is that everyone can do everything, and there's no perfect way to fix this. I think it would be more healthy for the game to have classes that must be chosen, that then provide unique skills or bonuses to using certain gear and crafting items. Three classes per character, things like shield bearer, berserker, assassin, and crafting classes as well.
But games nature of multiple characters makes any sort of class system rather arbitrary. Still, I think there should be a way to specialize a character further than just their stats.
