Good question. We've had some performance problems around launches before, but a lot of those have been bugs and stuff that has actually been fixed since, so I don't think we actually know. I would guesstimate that we reach full capacity at around 1500 players or so. Hard to say.
There are improvements in the pipe to potentially increase that number significantly, but they have thus far never been a priority.
With continents it may be possible to have multiple servers, 1 continent at each server, and then some dynamic switching and syncing between these servers so it would seem to the player that he is in one, large, single world. I guess that could happen even without continents, but continents give a more natural way of doing it.
Probably too much for 2-man (or 1-man) project. But that would enable the ability to handle large amounts of players while still having one world where people can go around, trade with each other and so on.
Issue with this is unless you will have some thing like ''bad storm'' that prevent men from entering continent once too many men are on it, there is no thing preventing all of the men to go to single continent all at once.
