I have a similar story, been playing off and on again for what seems to be approx 15 years now. Started in Legacy(around 2009 or 2010), moved to Salem for a little bit then left it all behind in disappointment up until i hear about the new Hafen and return again. Most of the Worlds i played was as a Hermit, which is the way i truly love and enjoy it the most. I still remember my first death, coming across a player and glaring at each other for a good couple of seconds up until he one shots me. Every single World i learn something new. Every single time i return there is something new.
This is my guilty pleasure. The fact that it gobbles up so much of my time and completely obliterates my productivity, yet still when it's been awhile my mind comes back to this game and wonders if it still exists, if it still progresses and how it may look like.
There is nothing like this game. This is a true masterpiece. There are many flaws yes, but the tremendous depth of this game, the feeling of progression, the fulfillment of building a beautiful base, the fear of death, the sadness of seeing ruins and skeletons around after a couple of months, the trading, coming across bases and villages, the amazing paving you encounter which encompasses the amazing creativity and devotion people show, every aspect of this game makes it unique. Makes it a true gem.
Yes there is a small part of people that will never be pleased, a very vocal little part that is actually responsible for most problems this game has, as it actively seeks to exploit and corrupt everything it touches. It's unfortunate that a big part of the people that have tried this game never got a real taste of what this truly is due to the harshness and "unforgivable" nature of both the game and this small community. But the game is still enjoyable. Very much so.
And hopefully a formula that manages to provide most players with the joy they seek here is reached and the population in game portrays it's true potential.
I would also want to thank Jorb and Loftar for everything they have done, their vision and their amazing creation. I understand that at times it's very tough to continue and maybe things have not worked out as they had hoped but there are many people out there that will never forget about this game and even if they never said so, they appreciate it and love it in their own way.
