Is there any hope something is gonna be done to stop this in the future or are we simply stuck with no choice but to wait for another ddos-attack basically living on the mercy of the person responsible?

We're strongly consider the "hird of virtual servers" outlined above. It's not trivial to implement fully, though, so it's more of a future project for now, but it's on the table. I also have a few ideas for more short-term countermeasures that I could potentially try if it were to happen again.

I'm afraid that worlds don't work like that.
New world comes when new world is due (due to reset-requiring updates to the game for example) and duration of the previous world has no effect on that.

FWIW, shubla has your answer on this. World resets are inconsistent at best. Worlds average over 10 months over the life of Haven. A few have exceeded two years each, and a few have lasted less than six months each.
