We're still considering whether we want such a thing or not. There are arguments to both sides of the question.

Make it, play around with it internally, then decide if it is useful? Maybe make it available publicly for a month or two before a planned reset?

I can certainly see some big flaws with this, but are there any flaws that the players themselves don't create with the maps we make on the web and privately? It would make navigating the world easier if we could figure out some relationship to where we are in comparison to others.

I think this is backwards order of product development.

I assume difference is that for world map we do use now, some players must visit these area to get minimaps tile and they will go out of date without more player visits. This API is makes all the informations available by default in most updated fashion. This is minor difference to me, but I think some minor philosophical difference like these does affect jorbtar decision making much.

No, pretty sure I have that correct. You can put all you want to on paper and do pros/cons all week long, but until someone makes it and then plays with it, nobody can really be sure it is actually useful. Some of the greatest engineering feats are things that people thought would be useless.

To a degree, yes. As is said:

But still, it is important to avoid wasted efforts. Especially true with only single programmer team.

There is difference between instance of serendipity and use serendipity as development strategy.

Ordinarily so, yes, but we also figure that realms are a wee bit more of a public affair and therefore mind it less. The jury is still out on the final decision.

We already have, and it's very useful to us. ^^

Well, just as with such things as global chats and wikis and stuff, there's a big difference between what the players make and what we make. If a player makes it, you can never be sure that it's correct, complete or not a fabrication.

While true in theory, I don't think we've made ourselves known for such things. :)

You can do it, information is open and easy to obtain.

Ah, talking about API and statistic, it would be cool to know more fun facts / info of the world other than players online and country.

Just figured, to know how many carrots has been eaten in the world, or other data.

Since Haven's nature of isolationism and deception I find it hard to really estimate and picture the world around us generally as access to info is hard unless you are a super power that can control and have access to many settlements.

Something like; 520 Heartlings has died since the beginning of World 9, etc.
