For fear of derailing further, it's not Old English, but Middle English, and if I recall correctly, it didn't go out of use until around 150-200 years ago. It was still being used during the Colonial period*, and I think up until the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. I'd have to dig some more to find specifics. It was likely out of use by the time Dickens was writing his novels in early-mid 19th century, but was being used a century or so before that. I seem to recall it being used in some of the early American novels I've read (can't recall if they were pre- or post-Revolution) that haven't been "modernized" to standard 21st century English.
*Then the 's' still looked like 'f,' and 'y' was frequently used as a short 'i' still.
