Wulf tried to defy the alter with an alt. It insta died.

If I recall correctly, the way it worked at the end of w8 was that you could attempt to climb onto the altar, and this could yield two results:
a) Your stats are inferior to the stats of the person on the altar - you die; or
b) Your stats are superior to the stats of the person on the altar - the person on the altar dies, and you take their place.

It could be that the alt's stats weren't high enough to survive interacting with the altar.

Yes, that's exactly it.
Remember that I got Jorb's skull - and his stats were huge (q1200+ skull) so it's a tough one. Good luck to those that try!
