How about some trolls? Jorb stated it would be something bigger.

They said they didn't like trolls because most monsters just get exploited no matter how big and tough they are.
How about Forgotten Beasts like in DF; massive, randomly generated mash-ups of other Hafen creatures that can fly over walls and spit acid or magma or something; and that spawn at a certain depth underground and climb out of the caves to destroy your village claim?
