Even when a game is good, if the playerbase doesn't regenerate and there's no advertising to draw new people to it, its player count will always drop because the core players will graduate, have children, break their computers, and other rl stuff.

I'd love to see more noob-y faces, but alas, no stones. :x
The low life has lost its appeal
And I'm tired of walking these streets
To a room with its cupboards bare

I just hope they're including stones as rewards in their new quest system. Hope is hopeless.

It is the unfortunate nature of this game, you sacrifice socialization for safety.

maybe its wrong, maybe it isnt, but its the drop is extremely noticable when you take into account the fact that nobody is looking for a group in dwarves & thieves anymore(ie barely anyone new is joining)

What's the reasoning behind not putting the game on steam? And the game is desperately in need of new content, or some kind of end game. Only a small percentage of players will continue playing after they hit the wall of having everything, only to spend months or years with the same content only to just raise the quality of said content. There's no fun to be had once you've got pretty much everything, and with the mining update that fasttracked months of work, what's the point other than political/pvp shenanigans. So if the end game is primarily pvp, why make the scariest part, being loss of months of work and effort, be what's held at stake? Pvp isn't rewarding enough to the average player, to even consider it, so it's basically a quality grind, hoping you make a strong ally, or just wait to inevitably be raided.
