I'm usually with granger on these types of things, I couldnt give a monkey when some girl gets kidnapped and its on news for years cause she's white or whatever. But this paris thing hits closer to home, I personally go to gigs in london all the time. I lived in a mostly muslim area in england for 3 years, but stuff like this is genuinely worrying.

well said

though as far as I know most of the victims were at a death metal concert so its not all bad

"Eagles of death metal" aren't actually death metal. Im not a huge fan but josh homme is part of the band and if he had died I would actually be upset because I want more QotSA albums.

As my brother likes to say, "dead men do not care. replaces: tell no tales" The victims are gone, so my thoughts are with their families. May they find peace within their hearts.

And to any who choose to kill in the name of an idea, I implore you, at least make it an idea worth dying for.

Like Georges Brassens, famous french singer and well known anarchist, song in the 70's : Let's die for some ideas, ok. But make it a slow death. Ok but make it a slow, slow death.
The whole song is cheeky and makes fun of people who think their ideology is worth dying for. Spot on, even 45 years later.

To die for your ideas. The idea is excellent
But I came close to dying for not having one,
For all those who had it, an overwhelming mass,
While howling for my blood came at me with full force.
They managed to convince me, and my insolent muse
Recanting her mistakes, rallies to their belief
With one tiny proviso all the same
Let us die for ideas, fine! but let death come slow
Fine! But, let death come slow.

Judging that there’s is no great risk in hanging on
Let us go to the other world taking our time
Because, forcing the pace, chance is that you might die
For ideas, no longer current on the morrow.
Now if there is a thing, bitter, and heart-breaking
On rendering one’s soul to God, it’s to find out
That you went wrong and latched onto the wrong idea.
Let us die for ideas, fine! but let death come slow
Fine! But, let death come slow.

The Saint John Chrysotoms (3) who preach for martyrdoms
Most often, besides, dawdle down here on earth.
To die for ideas, we are quite right to say so
Is their reason for living, they won’t do without.
In almost all the groups, you see some supplanting
Soon Methuselah’s record for longevity.
I conclude that they must whisper to each other:
Let us die for ideas, fine! but let death come slow
Fine!! But, let death come slow.

Ideas demanding the supreme sacrifice
Sects of every ilk offer followers of these

And the question is asked of the novice victims:
To die for ideas, is very nice - but which?
And as they are all alike, one with the other
When he sees them coming, with their great big standard
The wise man, hesitating, gives the tomb more time.
Let us die for ideas, fine! but let death come slow
Fine! But, let death come slow

Again, if it took only a few mass slaughters
For all at last to change, all at last be put right

Since so many grand nights when so many heads fell
In our heaven on earth we’d be already there
But the golden age is postponed constantly
The gods are still athirst, have never had enough

And it is death, death, over and over again

Let us die for ideas, fine! but let death come slow
Fine! But, let death come slow

Oh you firebrands, oh you the good apostles,
Be the first to die then, we stand aside for you.

But for mercy’s sake, heavens! allow the rest to live.
Life is nearly their sole luxury down here
For in truth, the grim reaper keeps close enough watch enough
She does not need people to hold for her the scythe
No more dance macabre around the grim scaffolds
Let us die for ideas, fine! but let death come slow
Fine! But, let death come slow

I mean, you do realize that Middle East was a shit place even before these imperial nations?

actually, it wasn't. I think the assumption that somehow it's some terrible place is very much a narrative that has been given since 9/11 to excuse the shit being perpetrated in that region. maybe it never was some great land of the free, but it was certainly not a shit place for people who were living there in relative peace.

The Middle East hosts a number of different countries, and yet often talked about as if it's one country.

They played an important role providing the conditions for the Italian Renaissance. The top handbook of medicine used for centuries in Europe was a middle-eastern work, and islamic, of all things. There are texts of Aristotle which had to be translated from Arabic into Greek because we had destroyed their originals over here. If they were shitty nations, we were much worse.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

do you actually think al-qaeda or isis would exist right now were it not for the nations mentioned? it's largely shit because of outside forces
It is nice to rest your weary bones from time to time. It is nice to lay down your burdens. It is nice to have a seat.
