Thanks :D
Yeah, the charter is up and the gates are always open, now... So visiting again should be really easy :3

Thanks :) glad to be posting again :3

I'll try to finish chapter 14 tonight. I really want to rush these chapters because they're mostly about past events... I didn't want to say that I was back before the new claim was built and the shields are up and all that - since the Retreat literally slept two days without ANY kind of claim whatsoever when I was re-creating the village (and the private area walls were fresh and could be taken down) for safety walls... So everything on these chapters are past events and I want to hurry because there's a lot of goodies to be shared that have been happening! Silk farming! New animals with a nice ancestry story (wink wink spoilers), Minehole frenzy, LEVEL 5! and some other stuff like the Windmill :)

So hopefully I'll get there soon enough!

Edit:
Falling asleep :P
Tomorrow morning it is!

CHAPTER 14:
THERE AND BACK AGAIN

All things must come to pass.
But sometimes it is not yet the right time for them. Not yet.
So if order was to be estabilished again, the ghost of Wulf's Retreat had to open the way for the future. Not the Ghost, of course. She remains part of the story for now on.

So, with a new and amazing idol chain made of silver gently given by her, the new Wulf's Retreat came to be:

Image
Me, I and myself as founders

The work was only starting, however. There is so much to do and so much to be remade. All the industries and all the crafting, everything that was taken or changed, everything that needed a new approach... I had one goal, however:
The Retreat would be better than it was and would achieve greater things than it ever did.

I had to start somehwere, though... and for that I needed some stuff.
And for that... well. I did have a Wrecking Ball...

Image

Tommy had a nice room. Tommy was a nice neighbor. I've mentioned him before. We traded stuff and visited each other; we talked some and had good memories together.
Another thing that Tommy was is... well, gone. His claim was lost and his place was degrading more and more each day. It was a matter of time until it would all fall, either by the work of strangers or the irrepairable work of time.
So, I'll make sure Tommy's legacy is continued in good hands :D

Image

Sorry, Tommy. I'm taking these before the decay does...
They will be very helpful. Hope you come back one day, I'll gladly help you out!
After a lot of hauling, I guess I had enough stuff for a new beginning.

Image

The day was great already, but the good news didn't stop there. As the old come and go, the new also shows up... And so my new neighbor came to be.
Knowing her from different games, I've recently been trying to bring some new people into Haven. A day or two and they're already getting interested and thinking of settling.

Image

Another great thing found at Tommy's was some Silkmoth eggs. I had a silk farm built (and it was left mostly untouched) although I never started farming silk myself. With a lot of mulberries around, I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to finally start.

Image

Indeed it was a great day.
By the end of it, the Ghost came by with some new presents. Yay!

Tools and some stuff to help me out. I was trying to capture mouflons when she talked to me and so she offered me a breeding couple of sheep. I refused at first - but then I heard the most amazing story.
She told me I had "rights" over those sheep. I mean, how could I?
Turns out that some of my flock lived (I did spare some of them) and... well... She took them for herself.

So... she wasn't simply offering me sheep. She was literally offering me the descendants of my own sheep. Their bloodline lived through another great act of our Ghost :)
After knowing that I couldn't really refuse anymore. It was time for our wooly friends to come back to the home of their ancestors :)

Of course, as she usually does ( :) ) she also brought a breeding couple of horses.

Image

It was a good day.

In the next morning, I did some massive hunting. I'd need a lot of leather for my upcoming project: to finally extend the Retreat's mine to L5 (I left it at L1 when I went away). Wax wasn't a problem: I produce tons of it with my cosmetic bee skeps and there were tons of it left in my farm. So the only problem would be leather and ropes. Both can come from the same sources, so... Hunting it is.

Image

I also left some of Tommy's ore smelting and I guess he was a lucky miner. This will help getting the mining started sooner than I thought.

Image

The rest of the morning was well spent traveling around for string - which allowed me to meet a very friendly (and also new to the game) russian which I tried to help a bit. Talking was slightly complicated, we did so with translators, but I ended up managing to teach a few things and hunting some foxes and boars. And then I came back to my friend's place and helped her design a layout and build a nice palisade, for which I provided the materials.

Image

Soon enough she was able to start her farming operations. I had an old metal plow that wasn't used anymore and she really appreciated it as a gift. I would as well; plowing can be tiring but a metal plow is awesome :D

Image

Since I was helping anyway, figured that taming a horse could be a nice act as well.
I got my first horse - Nimbus - as the nicest gift from the Wizards back then.
I like when cycles find their way into our lives, when things go there and back again... So now that I'm back, I might as well give someone their first horse too :)

Image

With all those things going on and the work progressing faster than expected, my Minehole rush started...

What wonders would I find beneath the mountain?, I thought to myself. They didn't take long to start to show up, and as I digged deeper...
L2, L3...
The true riches of the Retreat started to reveal themselves before my eyes... and my ears.

Image

What else will I find?
Hopefully... not a troll.

CHAPTER 15:
FOR KING & COUNTRY

Today's chapter is a very special one.

Image

I have mentioned before that the Retreat is now a part of the Ivory Kingdom and I've been formally oathed to its Sheriff King Kaios, the Magnanimous, and to its land.
After the Kingdom of AD fell to the hands of gods and men, the Ivory Kingdom rose from its shadows to cover the hearthlands with justice, fairness and kindness unlike any other realm across the lands.

It is with proud that I accept the Retreat to be under its rule. The mountain might be my master, but we're now part of something bigger than us.

Before we start, though, let me share a couple of news... The days have been great and peaceful. Inside the depths and the tunnels of this peak, the real and magical fortune of the Retreat is being unhearthed. Metals of all varieties and types - and even precious, shiny metals like silver - are being smelted day and night in the furnaces.

Image

Work is non-stop in the kitchen, to feed all the labour and the mining, the carving and the hunting. It's not an easy task, that's for sure, but the fields have been generous and the hunts have been plenty; so there's nothing to complain about.

Image

Talking about complaining, if there's one thing that I can't deny is how happy I was to finally rebuild and activate the brewery. The special mountain blends, prepared with pure water from the meltings, are sitting tight, ready to become precious beer. With more than 250 liters prepared, the brewery is now working almost every day. At least there will be beer.

Image

And after another nice update, I now had another dream to turn into reality. The Retreat deserved a windmill worthy of its name!

I set off to gather all the materials and the wood I desired. Had to hunt some Planewood and A LOT of string material, but the worst part would be the cloth... Turns out I really wanted white sails, so I had to figure it out since I didn't even have enough wool for 5 pieces of cloth.

After an ingenious idea from the King, Kaios, I figured out what to do. He suggested I rounded up a bunch of mouflons and kept shearing them every 10 minutes or so by offering a new clover...
I needed at least 20 Wool cloth... 6 wool per cloth... Yeah.

Well, I don't give up easily... so:

Image

It was a long night.
But in the end and with an extra help from the Ghost for the final materials, I had finally gathered it all!
Time to build!

Image

It didn't take long...
And as the sun started to rise and the first few rays of light touched my face, there it was; beautiful and massive, the windmill!

Image

I quickly built the mechanism inside of it and picked a few seeds I had spared for baking.
As Jorb would say it in his Update Thread, there I was... watching the seeds turn into glorious flour.

Glorious.

Sidenote:
I've built a field cairn so my windmill has "trespassing" and "theft" rights for everyone.
If you live nearby, feel free to use it! It's a "community windmill" :)

Image

Anyway, with all that out of the way...

It was a beautiful day when I heard the summons. It was time.
I was oathed, yes. And was even helped a bit. But something was missing...
It was finally time for me to travel to the King's lands and his fellow countrymen's. I had things to take, had gifts and offerings to kindly accept - like precious bear meat and silk products - and had a charter stone to visit.

It was a nice journey through the mountains, and once out of them, I've been greeted by an escort in the woods.

Turns out that none other than the Sheriff King himself came to escort me! Honored, I followed him and his mighty steed.

Image

From the woods to the wetlands, we've passed a beautiful and never before seen (for me) countryside. Worried about my rags, I did my best to follow such a kingly company.

Image

After some riding and entering some pretty and expansive moors, we've finally reached our destination... The wonderful town of Belle Dame.

Image

I was more than delighted with the wonders and the beauty of that town. Our host; the Lady of Belle Dame, greeted us nicely and took me to a little tour. The details, the trees, the nice pavements and the cozy, relaxing tables on the outside...
I was speechless. After a whole world building and living on the mountain, where I can't shape the terrain or sow no tree nor crop... I forgot how much freedom and beauty we can give to normal settlements.
I do my best with the Retreat, of course. But I look forward to what wonders we'll be able to create in future worlds.

Image

We've gathered inside the hall to talk and feast, and was a pleasant visit.

Image

After that, the King took me through a big journey throughout the realm's domain. Tunnels, fortresses and outposts, I've seen and visited more than I ever imagined; all of that reminding me of how little and humble the Retreat's dream is. I've no excuse to fail and to disappoint the people across the Hearthlands!

Image

After getting everything and gladly accepting the presents and gifts given to me, it was time to go.
But I shall not forget the Belle Dame I met that day; nor the generosity and the gifts of its Lady! I know that I shall return there, now that the charter stone is visited, and I look forward to it!

Image

Back to the usual cold breeze of the mountain, I've decided to explore the abandoned settlements to the north, where I have not been much since I came back.
Down to the marshlands, I found the remains of several villages. Some of them seemed to have been raided, others perished to the relentless time.

Lucky enough, I found a broken wagon. By improvising a saw and a couple of boards, I could get it to work again and brought with Nimbus. Oh, I also did bring a lot of Cupboards. It's annoying to get wood for them up here, you know.

Image

A couple of days later, it was my time to be the host. An official party, led by the King himself, decided to visit the Retreat to know more of the installations and visit the Charter Stone.

They traveled long and arrived in the evening, I was by the gate to greet them and welcome them in.

Image

I showed them around and got inside most of the buildings. They apparently liked it - I hope - although I was very unhappy with the fact that I couldn't prepare them any food before their arrival... How rude of me!
Hopefully that won't happen in the next time.

Who knows? Perhaps I should host a feast one day!

Image

After getting to know the village and admiring the mountain view, we went down into the heart of the mountain, where I showed them down all the mineholes and tunnels...
It was a nice expedition as we explored yet uncharted tunnels.

Image

By the end of the night they were gone, and I was left there to wonder about what will the future bring to the Retreat, and to the kingdom?
Good fortune is all I wish. It has worked... for now.

Hey, I know you! :D
Thank you very much. Now, without further delay...

CHAPTER 16:
BROS BEFORE DOUGHS

This one is a bit longer than usual, so get ready :)

Another beautiful morning in the Retreat...

Image

The days have been busy, as usual. A lot of work has been going on since I came back.
At first, most of the work was focused on bringing the place back to a 'running' state. That took some time and effort but was possible and done faster than I expected thanks to all the amazing people that helped - and the Ghost, of course :)
Soon enough, I was already figuring out ways to improve the Retreat now that it is back to activity.

One of the first things I came up with is what I'm calling a "Quality Yard". Now that I have some stuff that is of greater quality than regular building materials, I needed a different area to store it all so it wouldn't get mixed with regular wood and such. I came up with a nice design that also filled one of the empty spots that I had no idea what to do it since no houses could be built on it because of the terrain elevation.

Image

Turns out I really like it! And the shed is very useful to store tools and wheelbarrows.

But hey, by now you might be wondering "Quality? What do you mean, quality? Are you grinding quality?"
Well - yes! Since I came back I decided to start up some of the industries I was lacking before my time away. Thanks to the donation of good seeds and such, my little grove has been up and running for a few weeks now!

Image

Not only that, but with mulberries being replanted all the time and a new and better Loom and Spinning Wheel built with good quality wood and fibres, I'm finally able to keep my silk farm running - and now with 100% efficiency: all 20 cupboards being rotated every couple of days.

Image

The tree grove and happy winds have also led me to more fun projects to fill the empty spaces with some of the nice stuff that was added while I was gone. Since now I plant Hazelnut trees, I can use its awesome wood for pretty buildings like those little and cozy rabbit hutches. I'm populating them as we speak with new rabbit tenants! I hope they appreciate the cold weather...

Image

Oh, and yeah - there's a new, yellow wagon on that picture. You probably noticed it.
Well...
As the first wagon, this one was also found on an abandoned settlement. Turns out it also had a LOT of crops ripe for harvesting, and I couldn't simply ignore all that flax and hemp, right?
So after a few trips and haulings, got myself a neat loot.

Image

With all the building going on, tar sticks have been a necessity... So I've also built a new Tar Kiln with better stones from Level 5 and have been burning tons of pine since them. I'm also planting pine - the better quality tar might be useful in the near future.

Image

A lot has happened down the mountain as well.

It took quite some time, a lot of careful planning and materials testing... And a bit of help from me with the time restricted parts like the wax, of course :)
But my new neighbor started her housing life in style:

From leanto to Great Hall!

Image

It turned out really nicely. I'm glad she's enthusiastic about making pretty buildings :)

Later that night, my 250 liters of wort finally turned into glorious, golden beer.
Glorious indeed!

I put it all in barrels and started my beer stock. Hopefully it will be filled with barrels one day, ready to be consumed by visitors and friends!

Image

Talking about eating and drinking, that was some awesome timing.

Not long after that I've received an awesome invitation from the Lady of Belle Dame.
She is going to host a feast for the kingdom in her beautiful town - I knew I would return there eventually! - and it will be a grand one at that. Bonfire, amazing furniture & symbelware, rows and rows of cupboards filled with food, etc...

For that reason, the whole kingdom will need to help her in preparing such a majestic event.
Besides a bit of foraging and other minor trivialities, I was tasked with hunting. A lot of it. The Lady and King Kaios himself would come with one of their Knerrir to collect all the meat - so I couldn't disappoint them.

I took up my sword and my shield and did my best... Bears love to hide, though. Bummer.

Image

But there is something else... If the King is coming with one of their mighty Knerrir, he would need somewhere safe to port it... and also a road connecting straight to the Retreat since no river gets to it, obviously.

Alright, that sounds like a good excuse to build something nice... So I guess it is time to create a northern road - the Boreal Slope Road - and it should end near the water... Where I shall build a harbour.

Image

A lot of night digging followed.
I had found the perfect spot - the closest water body to the Retreat - and imagined a nice harbour between two hills.
Should be something simple enough to be built in a couple of days but also fit enough for a great Knarr.

Terraforming took some time since I had to carve the sides of the hills but after it was done I quickly started with the paving and planning of a layout.

Image

A nice harbour should have wide ways, carts and room for cargo... storage, etc.
I quite enjoyed that work and soon it started to take shape.

Image

By the next day it was almost complete, but some finishing touches were still needed.

It would also be useful to have a building or two in it, so more delicate cargo can be safely stored. I was choosing lighter tones for the paving and such, so I ended up going for this very light and cheerful White/Green palette...

Image

Welcome to White Harbour!

Right.
So now I have the meat and I have a nice, claimed and safe spot for the Knarr to land.
All I have to do is wait...

Image

I prepared everything to make sure they'd arrive safely, lit some fires along the shores of the river to guide their final approach and started my watch over the night...

They traveled far but it didn't take long before I finally saw it coming with a glorious pirate sail fit for a pirate lady like the Lady of Belle Dame.
Not so fit for a Sheriff King - I guess - but he is king so he might have whatever he wants :D

Image

I really loved the Knarr! The model and the animations are pretty cool! I started to tease with the idea of building my own one day. I already built a place to park it anyway ;)

After the initial greetings and a quick and nice trip to the Retreat, a major skinning operation started. We decided to skin the animals in my place since they don't really need the hides, so the Lady took care of that since she's a very skilled survivalist while King Kaios and me ran back and forth carrying the skinned carcasses to the harbour.

Image

The sun was starting to break on the horizon by the time we were done. The ship was completely loaded and it was time to set sail.
After they got aboard and I started to wave, they invited me in.

"Come with us and then you can travel to your Hearthfire later", they said. "So you can see the Knarr."

Hell yeah! I jumped in and got myself a place on the crow's nest.
It was a good day.

... And I'm definitely building my own.

Image

The following day was very nice.
Surprisingly, however, the best part of it was a message: My old pal' Z - former neighbor from back in the day - contacted me.

He's doing well and all, which is great. Turns out he is now a baker in a pretty nice village far away. I'm glad he found a place there and managed to move safely. Hopefully he's being 50% awesome and 50% crazy there still :P
Anyway, he really wanted to visit. Like really. My charterstone got a "reset" after the village change anyway so he needed to visit it again to fast travel.

He asked me if he could visit and I was a bit worried. He is the baker after all, wouldn't he be busy? But nah, bros before doughs, I say.

Image

Took him some time but there he was, finally!
It was great to see him again and we talked a lot. I showed him the place, some new projects and ideas, etc...
He also brought me some nice delicacies from his ovens and a couple more nice things that I possibly shouldn't mention

After we were done with all that, it felt like a nice time for a boat ride. There were some places around I wanted to show him and it would be a cool and relaxing way to hang out and spend some time.

Image

It was a good time.
Before he traveled back to the village, however, I gave him a little gift too. A nice apple core with a pretty nice quality so now they can plant better apple trees. :)
Hopefully they've appreciated my gift :) I know it's not much but we do what we can, right?

Also, an IMPORTANT NOTICE!
I shared with him my thoughts about - maybe - hosting a big feast somewhere between Christmas and New Year's Eve (I'm thinking December 30th!); open for everyone across the hearthlands! He was super excited and encouraged/convinced me to do so by giving me the last push I needed... So that *is* a plan now. I don't know if I can get everything set up but you'll all know ahead of time - of course. Anyway - if the idea interests you please let me know so I can have an idea of what to expect and all that!

Back home, late at night...
That would be a nice ending for the chapter but there are things that must be said now.

I've witnessed something quite unusual...

Image

Two mammoths together.
That was a pretty cool view.

I was going to get closer but then they walked away from each other...

Image

Awe... :(
Sorry, Mammoths. I didn't mean to disturb you two. Just wanted a nice picture.

Wait, what is that--?

I see something approaching.
Someone, rather. Someone with a boat on their back.

Image

We meet and greet and I'm amazed. That was a long journey indeed.
I bring her in and offer a hot beverage. Welcome to Wulf's Retreat :)

Who is she?
Well... You will all know that soon enough, probably sooner than you expect! Keep your eyes open ;)
