Quest update was good update. At least it didn't cause backlash when compared to some other updates. This is mostly due the fact that the update didn't force you to change your existing playstyle and/or routines but gave you new options to develop your character or simply spend time in-game. I think only real issue that people had with the update was the fact that it broke custom clients until they we're patched.
Gilding system: People initially we're angry but once they got past the initial "unknown is bad" phase and (at least in my case) that now you can make cheap stat-boosting linen pants and don't have to rely on nettle clothes for survival gain, people accepted it.
Changes to charter stones at the start of w9, lots of changes at the start of w8 most notably the payments model caused big uproar and may have scared away players who haven't found out that the payment model is, if not perfected, at least vastly improved.
Curio revamp: player base reacted to it so negatively that devs actually reverted it.
