Dwarf Fortress on Steam

I thought this announcement deserved it's own topic, just wanted to share this with the community and wanted to hear your thoughts on the implementation of graphics.

I know some of you will consider it playable now, other will consider it ruined, so let's hear it out!

You can always play with graphics I think. Either way, I think this is not really a thing that is changing much. Maybe nice for die-hard steam fans.

Changing the tileset has always been trivial.

Hopefully they don't sell out.

I think that the implementation of graphics was not the issue:

Traditionally, Dwarf Fortress has only been available as a free download direct from the Bay 12 website. The Adams brothers say they’ve been offered large sums of money in the past for licensing deals, but the team has always subsisted on donations alone. It even made the move to Patreon in 2015. But, in today’s FAQ, the pair said that they’re selling this premium version in part to pay for health care for ailing family members.

It's been over a decade since you've been able to use non-text tilesets in DF.

I am pretty sure that graphics in the video are from fan-made custom tilesets. The original DF still has only ASCII graphics.
I wonder if the steam version will have some tilesets available in itself or do you have to download them separately. Probably the former one.

I don't think that theres much point in releasing it on steam.
Target audience of the that game is not on steam.

Never underestimate the widespread audience at Steam ... shubla what do you think how many HnH players have Steam accounts?!? ;)
How many Steam playes came to HnH via Wurm bought at Steam? Even Sami isn't unhappy about going Steam after nearly 25 years ...

Putting DF on Steam and itch.io is also a statement by Tarn, Zach and the crew!

Releasing on steam would kill the servers.
