Things that don't fit with the game's setting

Postby Ants » Mon Mar 18, 2019 12:12 am

People in critique and ideas keep complaining about things that wouldn't fit with the game's ancient nordic theme. How about we make a compilation of everything that's already in the game but doesn't fit the theme? Here are the things I can think of off the top of my head:

Snowglobes (invented in 1900's Vienna )
Top hat (invented in 1700's England)
Monocle (invented in 1700's Germany)
Teddy Bear (invented in 1900's USA)
Feather duster (invented in 1870's USA)
Golden Cat (invented in 1600's Japan)
Toga (was primarily worn in ancient Rome)
Opium (didn't get popular in Europe until the 1500's. Even then, it was mostly a British and Portuguese thing)
Kebab (it was mostly a middle eastern thing)
Hookah (it was mostly a middle eastern thing)
Tobacco (brought to Europe from America by Christopher Columbus in the early 1500's. It was mostly popular in Spain and Portugal.)
Tea (made its way to Europe in the 1550's, starting in Portugal)
Fossil collection (Europeans didn't think much about fossils until the 1600's)
Porcelain doll (invented in 1840's Germany)
Slinky (invented in 1940's USA)
Scarlet gown (come on now, that's a modern hoochie mama dress. You wouldn't have seen women wearing that before the 1900's.)
Bunny slippers (while slippers have been around for a long long time, animal themed slippers didn't become popular until relatively recently.)
Seal burgers (burgers were invented in 1800's USA)
Ant farm (invented in 1900's France)
Butter scones (invented in 1500's Scotland)
Candy apple (invented in 1900's USA)
Honeybun (invented in 1950's USA)
Maple Syrup (Europeans learned about it in the 1500's)
Pumpkin and everything made from them: (they come from Mexico and didn't make their way to Europe until Columbus went to America)
Mammoths (They went extinct long before the Viking age)
Rose gold (It was discovered in 1800's Russia)
Post boxes (invented in 1600's France)
Camembert (invented in 1700's France)
Bagpipe (it didn't get its current shape until the early 1700's)
Wine bottles made of glass (invented in the 1600's)
Almost every single hat in the store

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about certain things.

Who are you to decide this?

What if the goal of the game was to feel like you advance from cave days all the way to modern humans?

In that instance not only are you incorrect, but we also are just lacking a bunch of content.

If that was the case it wouldn't make sense to get tobacco and teddy bears before knarrs, which were mostly used in the early 1000's.

I thought the game setting was a fantasy clay world. Since most of the models look like they're modeled out of clay imo.

Game has a snowglobe, might as well add ridable dinosaurs.

*Assuming this game is set between 800 and 1066, known as the "viking age", somewhere in Scandinavia and North-eastern Europe (based on some very specific items like the "Kozhukh").

If that's the case, and for the sake of the argument, here's a few more:
- Peppercorn (cultivated in India, not Europe)
- Barley (cultivated no further north than Greece)
- Millet (cultivated in the Far East, barely reached Europe's borders)
- Silkfarming (mostly imported from China, Greece was the only European production centre. In the 12th century, production expanded to Italy, but no further)
- Spectacles (invented in Italy, at the end of 1200's)
- Chef's Hat (the 'toque blanche', as we see in game, dates back to the 16th century)
- Peppermill (as seen in game, invented in France in 1842)
- Peppershaker (first invented in 1858, became popular in the early 1900's)
- Tablecloth (in use almost exclusively in high-status feasts in the 11th century, became of common use much, much later)
- Wine glass (clear glass cups were first introduced in the late 1000's, and todays kind of glass was first made in the 17th century. Before then, metal and wooden cups were used.)
- Box of Matches (an early version comes from ancient China, but required a flame to ignite [like torches]. First self-igniting matches were invented in 1805)
- Hussar's Wings (Poland, 16th-18th century)
- Boar's tusk helmet (while helmets MADE OF boar tusks are an ancient item, and history has plenty of horned helmets, the "viking-style horned helmet" was actually introduced in 1876 as a costume at the Opera)
- Horse Nomad's Helm (mostly an asian thing, not really used in Europe)
- Scarlet Gown (...)
- Felt Hats (first introduced in the 14th century)
- Harmonica (Vienna, 19th century)
- Silk gloves (while silk was imported for other things, silk was first used to make lady gloves in the 13th century. Velvet gloves, similar to what we see in game, became a thing only by the 1870's)

Plenty of curiosities and foods should also be listed. I might do it later, if you care for it.

to be honest, you're being too critical of our criticism. Jorb & Loftar are often wrong (as is anyone) and deserve healthy criticism. this comes not from hate but love for the game and should be encouraged not mocked. play Legacy for a few hours and you will feel the difference how Haven has become much more "poppy". this thread is actually a good idea to bring to light the scope of this.

also you forgot to list the thing that started this whole discussion:

slimes (solified as an rpg trope around 1977 in dungeons & dragons)

Not being able to mix colors should be added to the list.
