Ways to categorize/group trees (larping alert)

Postby NeoBasilisk » Tue Apr 02, 2019 4:41 am

I want to make a "park" area that has every tree in the game planted, and I thought I might want to split them up or at least order them by some kind of rough categories. But I'm not sure what kinds of categories would make sense or which trees might go in each category. There are 54 different types of trees, so this is no simple task for an amateur. Obvious categories might include coniferous trees such as fir/pine/etc, or fruit-bearing trees such as apple/plum/etc, but there may be other categories that I am not aware of, and I am also not very familiar with some of the types of trees found in the game. I could do a lot of research, but I wondered if anyone else has an interest in this topic.

Just to clarify, I'm not asking for someone to neatly categorize all trees into groups, although if someone did feel so inclined, that could be amazing as well. Just throwing some ideas around or dropping some general knowledge about trees could be valuable as well.

well, the easiest way the differentiate is is what climate they grow in, I think that's not too hard to check up - make your own mini world

another should be by their production: fruit, cones, catkins, leaves etc - more of a usefulness thing

then you could go on game specifics, log/block/board yield - usefulness again

lastly, color and size, if you don't wanna bother checking all that info - aesthetics

    -coniferous trees
+cones (some "berries" or drupes are kind of cone - i.e. Juniper)
    (+evergreen)

    -deciduous trees
    +edible fruit and nut trees
    +unedible trees
    (+leaf fall)

that's how i'd sort them in a simple not that much botanical way

or just by colour of the logs ;)

Thanks for the ideas. I had thought of using alphabetical as a simple fallback plan if I can't come up with something else that I'm happy with. :D

Sorting anything by color (espcially related to tree-like colors) is quite simply beyond me, because I am colorblind.

When I was planting every type of tree last world I ended up sorting by number of seeds they give, just for convenience when replanting. Leaves a very long random line of 2 seed trees tho.
