"Discounts"

What do you think of them? Are there any discounts in your country?
In Finland, companies just double base-prices of their products shortly before the sale, and then put 40% off, so prices will be MORE than what they were before the discounts!

I have heard that in other countries like US, you can really find some good deals!

Germany offered Black Friday Deals, too, but mostly only in bigger cities.

What you describe happening in Finland is illegal in Germany.
A hardware-store called "Praktiker" did that and got severly punished iirc. Tho they did it the whole year ... it was their slogan "20% on everything"

I spent 200 EUR for some Star Citizen themed clothing.

Some companies in Canada open and close multiple times per year and they always have a "closing blow-out sale" with big signs and whatnot. Not always, but sometimes it is just the same owner closing and re-opening under a different name.
I'm not sure how profitable it actually is or what exactly they're trying to avoid by closing the place rather than just going on sale, but it must be worth the effort or they wouldn't be doing it.

This seems to often happen in Finland in some form, especially furniture stores do it often.
Basically every month or so they will "clean out their warehouse" and slap something like -70% or -90% on like EVERY SINGLE product that they are selling..

Stuff like this, even though they have been selling that specific sofa for at least 10 years, because I have seen it in homes.

Basically all their stuff is in huge discounts about 90% of the time.
One can think how can they still be in business if they are never asking the full price for their products!!

The "Going out of business sale" is one of the "discounting schemes" that got shut down in the US based on the grounds of false advertising (or at least parts of it... probably still some states that don't get policed on this). I'm not sure what the legality of opening a business for three months and running a "going out of business" sale would be. It certainly sounds shady. I didn't stay in retail long enough to go into the whole buying and economics, so won't even comment on its profitability, but I'm sure someone is making money somewhere if a person keeps doing it.

Car dealers used to be a nasty one for the "price bump then discount," especially when it came time to do factory/manufacturer-based sales (Ford as a whole would instruct their dealers to run a sale), at least until the Internet came along and people started finding out what the bottom dollar price was on a car and dealers couldn't really argue with it as you could just walk out the door to the other side of the city and get the other dealer to match the price.

I don't own a car, but I have heard that car dealers (at least in Finland) are worst of the worst when it comes to how they price their products.

A personal recommendation from me: get the "Pricy" extension for your browser. I am using it on both Firefox and Chrome. It tells you the evolution of the price of an on-line product up to a year. This way you will never get fooled by lying discounts advertised all over. I think the extension performance is direct proportional with the number of people using it in your country, so some of you might be unlucky but just give it a try, when it works is really useful. Cheers!

I'm pretty sure that it works only for very specific sites.
For example it probably doesn't work on Finnish sites. Luckily, there exists similar things as websites in Finland, have been for years, which track prices of certain items on all (or most) Finnish shopping sites,

Recently one large store chain in Finland. (there are basically 2 big ones) has started giving people dynamic discounts.
What I mean by dynamic is that each customer gets different discounts, based on buying behaviour. How are discounts exactly
determined and do people get same amounts of them, no one knows, because the details of how the system works are of course not disclosed.

I think that this is very worrying. It should be illegal to do any kind of dynamic pricing, where store is selling the same product for different prices to different people at the same time.
I'm pretty sure that any kind of analyzation of the buying behaviour breaks the constitution, because things such as ethnicity and sex surely affect ones buying behaviour, and thus your sex etc. affects the prices of these things.

Yeah extensive monitoring and analyzation of behavior is already used for many things such as ads etc. but I think that these are different things. Who cares if you see ads for flowers more often only because you are a woman for example. Doesn't really cause any harm. But dynamic pricing based on these things is completely different and untolerable.

Made me think of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxfkWZPAUg4

I think it's worth a watch in it's entirety, but relevant part's TL;DR: JCPenney hired a new CEO who decided they will stop manipulating customer with fake discounts, even gotten rid of the 9.99$ tags and using 10$ instead. It backfired horribly. People were either so used to the manipulative discounts, or worse, are hardwired to fall for them, that they would rather buy 59,99$ things discounted to 29,99$ than simply buying equivalent 25$ thing.
