Actually mutch worse - trans fats banned in many countries, and rendered animal fat is a trans fat too, that's why it doesnt sell anywhere.

Lard, made from butter... Something to die for... Or to die from, in case you overdo it...
Potjeh wrote:Stuff cooked on butter does taste the best, but butter is too expensive for everyday use and clarifying it is a hassle. But lard is comparable in price to vegetable oil and it's orders of magnitude tastier, so I really don't understand why people use vegetable oil for cooking.

Can confirm lard is a gift from god when you need a cheap alternative to butter. Just don't eat a pound a day and you'll be fine. Makes greasing pie & pastry pans easier, adding flavor to just about any dish requiring butter good, and on top of all of that makes stir-fry dishes (Again don't eat the shit every day. Your fault if you turn into a lardass or die at 40 from your bloodstream turning into solid fat.) even cheaper than they already are. Added bonus if you can fish, and if your area has carp (Either as an invasive species or not.) you can make a load of fish based dishes for very cheap. Lightly fried catfish chunks, carp stiryfry, and bass tacos are a cheap delicious meal. Fuck if I know what salt water fish are like as in the midwest US we don't care about the coastal spergs and their fish. Freshwater tubing and hand fishing for life.shubla wrote:10 euros a kilo with 50 euro delivery fee is not what I'd call cheap price for clogging veins!
Like most things, fat and oils more so, don't eat it every day. Every three days to a week maybe. Lard and most fats & oils in themselves last for a long time. If you pressure can them even longer. Throw them in a freezer and can them they'll outlast your entire lifespan. Its good to keep on hand for quite a few purposes. In the US for instance you can buy tubs of lard or Crisco which make great long lasting candles if you wick them properly. On the other hand if you've never had a apple pie with lard substituting butter you've missed God's gift to mankind. Goes well with hardtacks as well but personally I prefer preserves with them. Makes hikes to fishing spots for setting trot lines more enjoyable.
Also buy in bulk if you have the freezer space to store long term. Like buying vegetables and canning them; buying in bulk saves you time, money, and space. Actually just can most things. If you don't like canning the modern, easier, equlivant is vacuum sealing which is ever easier to get into and takes considerably less time. Good luck if the power goes out and you lack a generator though.
