Likely they have no use right now. But if I were to toss a wild guess try wearing druidic gear and make a sacrifice to an ancestral shrine at a grove the run in. It would certainly fit lore of them. But as I said they likely are just for flavor.

Can confirm this is true, the candy is usually high Q candy apples.

Note: It is advised to cut down many quest givers in your area if you want to trigger this treant event, it doesn't always happen first try and sometimes cutting down the quest givers spawns treants.

tried giving them some water. right clicking a bucket and a waterskin onto them didn't do anything

The truth is that they're just non-interactable NPCs that wander around aimlessly forever. You'd think that jorbtar would do something with after the dryad has been in the game for 10 years.
