gathering stone from the ground

Hi, it's me again but this time with a question.
Since I have gotten into a area with no rocks arround I was happy finding this mountain like ground (like the montains in the old HnH) so I tryed to gather stone from it by digging but for realistic reasons (I guess) you can't ´gather stone like that...is there another way to yield some stone from this ground?

I figured if it is stone, you need stoneworking or mining to dig on it. Wouldn't surprise me if it coughed up boulders when you dig....
