I'm at a guess about the distane of 2.5-3 Old SGs away from the newbie area and there's no surface boulders within at least 10 minimaps radius... It's either unintentional or there's simply no boulders in many areas. On my way there I saw very few.

I'm relying on mining to harvest stone.

Some areas have little or no boulders. Others have so many you just chip them to dust because you're annoyed you keep bumping into them.

I can confirm that the map can be a little unforgiving on boulder spawns. I walked ~1.5 hours without seeing a boulder well outside the noob zone.
