Open your character sheet ( ctrl + t ) and you'll see the Hunger Bar in the first tab. There are multiple states and technically have names like Ravenous, Hungry, Full, etc. I only know them by their FEP %s. I hope you know what FEPs are, if you don't just ask. The hardest stage to get to, which takes over a week to return to, gives you 300% FEP gains. After that is 200%, then 100%, then 90%, then 50%, then 25%, etc. Raising out of 25% back up to 100% really only takes like an hour or two.
The only thing that effects hunger is time. Drinking water, burning energy, and burning stamina don't effect it.
You also have satiations. Satiations are based on the types of food that you've been eating and go down if you keep eating only one type of food then its effectiveness will drop and drop and drop. By eating a varied diet (such as meats, mushrooms, foragables, fish) you reset your satiations. Satiations do not appear to be tied to time.
So tl;dr eat food, lots of food, large varieties of food! The more varieties the better. Eat yourself down to 50% FEP gains and then let yourself go back to 100% FEP gains and eat some more.
