Don't feel too bad Malke, I explored for probably 12 hours of mining time (with good str I might add) and only found a small deposit of tin. You are pretty good off with coal TBH

It is a huge barrier that my group is stuck at currently lol, the only thing holding us back currently. Is coal rare for other people because I have heard it is. It's everywhere here. I am confident I would never need to burn a tar kiln, at the least not for a while.

hwo much str do i need to mine in caves and does stone axe quality matter?

Quality of your tool does. the mining ability of the character is the geometric mean of your tool and your str--sqrt (STR * Tool Q). It also depends on where you are. Some places you can mine with 10 STR and a Q stone axe. Others on first level you need 100 STR and a good (q30-40+) axe. Going down levels just gets harder.
