How to safely hunt in world 13?

It's been too long since I last played, I don't know what's changed, so I'm safely assuming EVERYTHING is different and i'll fuckin die if i do it wrong.

edit: oh and what UA levels should i need to fight common animals

Current tactic (for hunters specifically) is to use Pure MC.

Get 20-30 ua (depending on your agi, buffered for comfort due to being unsure of the combat system) fight bats in caves near entrance, foxes/badgers by rowboat on rivers. Back off in the water, or hop cave levels to reduce your openings to keep damage minimal. Deaggro/re-aggro rapidly when they run to bug their AI into running back to you (clients have quick aggro/deaggro options you should figure out the hotkeys for for this). Do this until you get quick barrage and/or fullcircle.

Pump pure MC, get a boarspear. Boarspear can attack animals from outside their attack range so you get free hits without taking damage. Combo is QB for opening full circle for finishing. Because you're on a boat you can now kill anything ***that can't swim or fly*** with as little as 10MC. Less than 100MC for bear/moose really sucks though and they take forever due to high armor.

Just stack IPs with boar spear, and switch to sword for dealing damage, so that you can use cleave instead of full circle and have a better time going through their high armor.

Or only use a sword, with the right approach, you can also get into a position where animals can't hit you. It's a bit more tricky though.

Also opportunity knocks helps a lot.

On land, but on water you should use friends/alts to catch ducks etc.

I've been under impression that to get melee moves, you need to hold a melee weapon while fighting an animal. However recent experience suggest that this has been changed, or has just been misunderstanding/myth.

Indeed. Never killed anything using UA, went from sling / bow straight into MC.
