Well Depth

I was dowsing around for a place to put a Well and the area I want to put is says it needs 120 stones and 26 rope.
I know those are variables based on how good the water is, but I don't know if more or less material is better.
The wiki seems to imply that less is better, but the Dig Deeper hearth magic would imply the opposite (more materials = farther down = better water)

How do I judge a wells quality without building it?

As far as I'm aware the materials required and the quality have nothing to do with each other

Water quality and well cost aren't linked.

Agree that the well cost being higher is justified by the water table being deeper makes it confusing that there's a spell called "Dig Deeper" which implies that deeper (more expensive) well is better.

The only way you can guess the water quality is by using normal water as a reference.
If the water quality in a river or lake is increasing towards the land side, you can try building a well in that direction.

I had around the same mat reqs and my water QL was 22

Yeah I tested this pretty thoroughly at one point there's seemingly 0 relation between cost and Q on wells
