Hi. Found 'flotsam' on the beach for the first time. Turns out I got a master key. I'm assuming this key is absolutely useless to me because I have no idea where it's for, right?

Should I just put it on the wall for decoration?

It's probably best what you can do with it. In most cases this will not open anything, someone just create additional key when locking and decide to "delete" it by dropping into the water (keys decay couple days at the ground).

Anything that players are dropping in the water are not deleted, but accumulating at trash pool. You can collect items from this pool by flotsams and fishing (if it was fixed). Items split by catergory, you have higher chance to get low value items like cattails or dead ducks rather then sword that someone dropped by missclick.

There's a good chance that there are no gates in existence for that key to unlock. Even if the key was attuned to locks that were installed, these gates may have decayed away. Furthermore, perhaps the most likely scenario is that someone built a stick fence and installed a lock into it, just to get the Master Key discovery. Then they broke the fence/gate and threw out the key.

Lol, I hate when people dump their excess soil into the water, halfway around the world someone wastes bait reeling in dirt. But I have found truly useful items; a month into this world I "caught" a Q80 merchants robe (which I still wear), a couple of worlds back I was overjoyed to "catch" a Q300 pick.

Lost keys are not rare, last world I dedicated a chest to my collection of keys, had about 40 by world's end; "Master Key", "Home Key", "Base Key", "Bob's Key", "X4 Key", "Key to Riches", etc. What's rare is finding what they fit.

One world when I had a lake in my base I did an experiment and spent a bunch of time dumping stockpile after stockpile after stockpile after stockpile of dirt into the lake to see how long it would take someone to complain on the forums if I did that day after day, and it took about 10 days
