Placing a Mining Hole

Is it a complete waste to place the mining hole down without finding rustroot first? In the previous worlds, how successful were you guys at finding ore through strip mining in a hole placed without rustroot extract and were support beams needed when you were zigzag mining in w7?

Snake mining shouldn't prevent cave-ins anymore. Supports cost a full metal bar now so it gets pretty expensive trying to use them for exploratory mining. Supposedly there's a mechanic to not cause cave-ins when mining but we have no idea what it is.

Thanks. Has anyone placed a mining hole yet? If so, do bats spawn in them?

I don't believe that's a planned mechanic but I could be wrong.

it LOOKS like snake mining works, its 3 in one, then shift to the side by 1......idk how to properly start it yet but so far this works, ive seen it a couple times now and tried it myself too, usually they start with a single support

No, snake mining still causes collapses. Sevenless has done some testing on mining and it looks like a game of minesweeper now. When you dig out a tile and dust falls from the ceiling, it means 1-8 of the surrounding tiles will cause a cave-in. Which one is predetermined, so you can choose to dig in a different direction or gamble and keep going.

Go read the post on the forums that explains the cavein system, basically there are predetermined cave-in tiles and if you mine near them dust falls from the ceiling.
