What's up with my barley?

Postby hazzor » Sat Oct 17, 2015 3:25 pm

I started farming it pretty much straight away, in q 25/20/30 soil, my farming has always been well ahead of the Q of my crops, currently at 70 farming, and yet my barley is q 9/24/19, I've got carrots and beets at 45-50, with everything else hanging around 35, so what's going on with my god damn barley?
Oh boy, here I go cheesemaking again...

From viewtopic.php?f=39&t=42730&p=556536&hilit=farming#p556536
In response to this report we have introduced a stronger general upward trend in crop quality development per generation. Each quality dimension should have a chance per generation of losing as much as 2 points, and gaining as much as 5.

Each batch of a crop which is planted in the same area (roughly two minimaps), time (roughly five hours), and of the same type(carrots, peas, barley, &c), will be given the same random quality modification uniformly, and planted tiles of that batch will thus all have their qualities affected in the same way.

TLDR: RNG

To the OP, my barley is also trailing all other crops, by a lot. I'm convinced it is not RNG.

Probably because you can't harvest it as frequently as others because it doesn't get speed boosts from bee skeps.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

You're not test planting, probably losing small amounts of quality from the 1 random point of variability you get over large fields, and you probably had multiple strains of barley in the field at first.

Those would be my guesses.

I'm harvesting barley on same frequency as flax, and more frequently than pumpkins. Barley is trailing in quality by more than half. My most recent replanting was -1,0,0 from previous generation. Instead of speculation, I'd appreciate if one of you would show me that your barley advances as well or better than other crops. Until I saw Hazzor's post, I thought I was just unlucky. Now I'd like to be sure.

I have 6 tiles of barley. They have been a single strain for weeks.
I also only have 6 tiles of flax, carrots, beets, 3 tiles of pumpkins and 2 tiles of beans. Only the barley is suffering a lack of improvement.

With test planting, my barley and my flax are both raising at equal rates. They're in the high 20's across the board.
