Lore/exp and Fate potentially connected

Postby Treetheater » Thu Oct 29, 2015 8:42 am

I've just had a small experience that makes me inclined to believe the experience system is somehow connected to your character finding fate curios.

I was riding along on horseback to claim some decent acre clay that I found, so I travel along a roadsign that happened to lead right to this area, and continue to walk south about 30 tiles to the 'dirt' biome itself. There was nothing of interest appearing on my minimap as I walked around the small plot of acre clay, so I build my claim and all is well. As i'm leaving the acre clay area, I found a clover, which were high q in the area, so I decided to stop and pick it up, which results in me receiving the 'fragrance of flowers' lore, or whatever its called. After that happened, for some random, heat of the moment reason, I rode my horse a little ways back down southward, exposing the top quarter of the acre clay area to my 'view' radius, and low-and-behold there was a bloated bolette sitting right next to the clay, where not even 30 seconds there was nothing.

I've never seen a foreagble spawn like this, generally you can walk through the same area for a couple hours before you start seeing a new set of goodies to pick. So for me, this almost confirms that these two systems are somehow interwoven, which could make sense given that they were both implemented for the same purpose of discouraging botting...

What do you guy's think? Has anyone else had an experience like this they can recall??

I'm inclined to believe. I haven't had such an exact experience, but I'm a fairly casual player - I haven't gotten lore xp for quite a few days, if not a week. I haven't found a bolette in like a month (I was foraging here and there, still). My xp was dropping so I decided to go out and do all the events - from picking flowers, lighting fire, walking to cave, walking under willow etc. Then once I was back to my base (after all the lore farming) I found a bolette. So not entirely sure if really connected, but I can definitely see the logic in the two being connected.

Wow, this just happened to me, I got the smell flower lore thing and found a bloated bolete too, I don't know if the bloated bolete was there before but man that's weird

Beware sample size when dealing with rare random events. Personally haven't seen any connection.

So as soon as I feel particularly good about standing barefoot in the grass I should run and boil some clams. Jorftar trying to simulate a world of insane people.

it certainly doesn't prove getting a lore event changes your fate. it could've been any random variable, a reroll server side on the fate seed for boletes, maybe even something as simple as longer time between last fate find. but it's possible.

I realize this thread does little to 100% prove or disprove this theory, but like I said, forageables don't spawn like that...ever. I've never seen it happen so fast, even once, in legacy or hafen. Typically it seems like you need to leave the area completely for at least 10 minutes, and have it 'unloaded', to have a chance of finding new stuff. My first post references being able to walk through the same area for a few hours before this will happen, and I imagine that's the result of that area being 'loaded' too often for it to refresh.

Although with 'fate' being a new system, it's hard to exactly treat them 100% identical to foregables, so I can accept that this information doesn't convince everyone. Perhaps it was just a random server side reroll at an unfortunately skeptic time for me to receive it.

I'm almost positive the fate system already operates somewhat like the lore system, just not entirely sure how they're connected, if they are. I can tell you when I found the only pearl I've gotten, it was on the very first river mussel I boiled that day. Certainly doesn't seem like that's a coincidence, I was just fated for pearls at that moment. Has anybody else found a pearl on their first mussel?

With the way farming quality randomness works, I wouldn't be surprised if this is in there for both fate curios and experiences.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Hasn't jorb almost explicitly stated that fate is not random, though? IE the name of the system itself? :P

Really, the more I think about it the more it makes sense that they'd both be connected. What better way to ensure that fate curios are indeed rare and mysterious than by connecting them to the already obscure and tedious-to-manipulate system of lore. Not to mention they are both completely new game mechanics that both were implemented with hafen's release.

I don't think it'd be very easy to get 'hard evidence' for this case without any access to the server information...Which, yet again, helps convinces me this is all part of the dev's master plan. But if anyone has some sort of methodology that they'd think would be appropriate for testing this, please say so! I guess we'll just have to wait for more people to post some anecdotes about their experience with the fate system and maybe one day we can come to a sort of 'soft' conclusion that lore somehow plays into the fate system.

Until then we can all take solace in the fact that jorb/loftar are probably very amused seeing everyone try to figure out how this shit works...

This much, at least, has the ring of truthiness to it.
