Hermit Endgame

Postby TestifiedWolf » Sun Nov 08, 2015 12:18 am

I don't know if this is the correct place to ask for this but I guess I'll do so either way.
What should I (realistically) aim for as hermit pretending to play, casually or otherwise, for an indeterminate amount of time?

For context, I've been playing on and off since around week 2, currently settled about six hours from the spawn and I don't have a subscription (mostly because paypal sucks here) so I'm juggling with my play time with a couple of alts for foraging and mining (barely any stat investment compared to my main).
I originally planned to stay at my current location but had some hostile encounters and evidence of other hostile encounter/neutral settlements nearby so I'm considering to move once again. I don't see myself building a brickwall anytime soon as I only recently started mining and the workload is rather large for the time at my disposal, so the only option for long time safety would be to move several hours more in which ever direction but I already have a silk installation going with a bunch of trees planted.

I could probably wait until my merchant's robe is done and maybe tame some bull in the meantime to get a wagon going but that would take time and make the trip a lot more dangerous and I really don't know what to do.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Move or a brick wall. it's pretty much the only two options.

How far is far enough and how much time until palibashers are a reality?

They've been around for a long time, and with the metal Q changes they will be popping up all over thanks to HQ symbol items for even lesser developed villages.

It's really not that hard to get a brickwall even as a hermit aside from maybe fueling the steel if you're busy irl.

palibashers are already out there. the world seems to end about 24h of walking. walk to the end and then 2h back?:p or find a quieter part of the map, you have to chance upon it really.

I wouldn't quite recommend going to THE end since some other people will be doing the same and skirting around the perimeter of the world as well. It might be more work but what I think would work is to go to the end and then back track about 30 minutes so that you are out of minimap sight.

Inb4 the area 30 min away from edge becomes crowded.

Send an alt and explore the circle that is 1h around your home, find a peacefull place, make a palissade, bring your valuable stuff there and some seeds, finish what you have to do in your present place while you bring stuff in the new place.
Keep your main indor with an alt working outside, if raided, logout.

About how much cast iron would get me a brickwall without deep artifice?

And I take that my best bet is still finding a way quieter place but what about the actual mechanics of moving? I can't possibly carry all my shit, even less if i want to drop a palisade as soon as possible and whatnot.

Also apart from all this stuff, if there's any experienced hermit reading this, what else should I know/consider in the long run?
Animals, cheese, steelmaking, all seem like a lot of effort and even if I want to get to that point in the game, I feel like I'm getting real close to burning out.

Hermit endgame is to move to village or get raided.

If you move, do not bother carry all your stuff. Only take what you need to start up somewhere else. Seeds are your priority number one for example. Think how much time it would take you to aqquire said item at your next location, and then decide what you need.

Do not even try to create a brickwall without deep artifice. It takes weeks or maybe months for a casual hermit to get those 150K LP, but it is a good investment in the long run.

I don`t know how far away I am from a brickwall myself, not sure whether the cost of it have changed since last world. But that is the ultimate goal, even if it may take a year. I still have not decided what to do if my place gets palibashed in the meantime. I always thought that mechanic was a major design flaw, since you cannot do much to defend yourself against such an action other than to play very low key. Location is one of the key factors.

A general advice for a hermit is to scale your base in relation to how much time you are able to play. Focus on what you enjoy doing ingame, and do not bother much with the rest. Do not get discouraged by how slow everything moves. Or how low q you have on everything. You can still have a fun experience in Hafen, you just need to scale your expectations accordingly.

It was a tad easier being a hermit in last world, since you had the option to trade over long distances - and could improve your base that way.

Steelmaking is possible even if you are a hermit, you need to plan ahead really well is all. Since you need to have tame animals now for cheesemaking, the time investment there is something you need to consider. I decided against it this world, it makes the game a tad easier to play for me. But, I also know I am missing out on a lot that way - but that is casual for you.

Good luck!

Edit: Forgot the most important advice. Always log out with your most prized possessions in inventory. If you are able, devote a character to this.
