Can you find cinnabar on the surface or do you have to mine it in a cave

It's on the surface, big red rock. You can find it below as well.
You'll probably have to travel far and wide to find it though.

This dreadful ailment's heavy toll;
The spleen is what the English call it,
We call it simply, Russian soul.”

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

I've only just found some, it's really pretty ... if it helps, I found mine north, quite close to some mountains and in those gassy areas with lots of pink flowers.

Well if you've ever mined underground you'll know that boulders and groups of stone (and ore) underground both spawn as the same type in their own very small area.

And I mean really small, like maybe 10x10 at most

What you find depends what direction you go. I found dolomite, then feldspar, then sandstone. A little past me is schist, cinnabar and basalt (mountains rock). I think there was granite near the spawn area I walked through but had been mostly used up. Using quarry to get stone is far more effective. Is marble, cinnabar or porphyry available on L1 to be quarried on the surface?

this isn't true. i've found no correlation at all between surface boulders and stone deposits in the cave layer.

boulders types seem to behave in some sort of supergrid typing where all the boulders are of the same few types (with an ore type that is rarely manifested) hours between, then they change to another group.
