Early Hours Guide

Postby slipper » Mon Feb 08, 2016 1:41 pm

So that you won't have to explain every new player what to do. :)
I won't go into details of how to do every single thing, but this should outline some landmarks if someone is at a loss of what to do next.
Feel free to make suggestions.

Early Hours
Buy the Lumberjacking, Foraging, Hunting and Carpentry skills.
Craft your Stone Axe.
Find a Hollow Log.
Chop 3x block of wood. Craft Clogs [C>C>C] and Wooden Cup [C>S>C>C]. Wooden Cup holds 50% more water than a Kuksa.
Fill your Wooden Cup in a nearby river, but be sparing with your energy/stamina. Only Run (3rd speed) on terrains where Sprinting (4th speed) isn't grayed out.
Gather 6x birch bark.
Level exploration to 3.
Gather 2x taproot.
Craft a Birchbark Backpack. [C>C>K>B]
Gather 1x taproot and 2x fir bough.
Craft a Spruce Cap (+1 perception). [C>C>H>S]
Gather 1x bone and 1x any tree bough.
- the easiest way butchering a chicken, they don't run away -
- squirrels are also easy, they run slower than your third speed -
- rabbits are the hardest, use your Crawling (1st) speed to get closer, then switch to Sprinting (4th) to be able to catch up -
Craft a Bone Saw. [C>C>T>N]
Chopping a tree wastes too much stamina and energy. At this point, someone probably already has chopped one. Use this to your advantage and bum 2x boards so that you can craft a Bucket. [C>C>T>B]
Throw away your wooden cup and fill up your bucket at a nearby river. You can drink directly from the bucket, but you can only carry it if you equip the bucket on a hand slot.
Buy the Fishing (good LP source) and Will to Power (combat skills, whose discoveries net 50 LP each).
Level exploration to 6.
Level survival to 4.
Level unarmed combat to 3.
Get at least an extra perception point by eating blackberry and/or grilled frog legs. (12 total with Sprucecap).
Now you'll craft some clothing to increase your survival and unarmed combat abilities. You'll need a bunch of stinging nettle.
Keep in mind that you can wear two pants and two shirts at the same time.
Craft them in this order:
Nettle Pants
Nettle Pants (at this point you'll have 5 in unarmed combat, which is enough to fight ants without taking damage)
Nettle Shirt
Nettle Shirt (at this point you'll have 10 in survival)
Having 10 in survival, remake your equipment (except backpack, bucket, bonesaw) so that your stuff is at least quality 10.
A q10 Stone Axe is enough to mine some walls and perhaps score some iron ochre. Mining is kinda expensive, so it's kind of optional.

Fishing for LP
I won't explain how to craft the fishing equipment, you should be able to know by now.
Carry some spare strings and bone hooks.
Find a swamp.
Gather as many dragonflies as you feel like. Put one in your study, the rest you'll use as bait.
Meanwhile, let the leeches suck your blood. When they are full, they'll also be used as bait.
Fishing, you earn LP in three steps, but only when you get a new kind of fish (discovery): when you fish it, when you butcher it, and when you roast the fillet.
Each fish will net you at least 150 LP, which is pretty much an instant low q Ant Soldiers. And there are 19 kinds of fish listed on the wiki. You do the math.

One does not simply make cups out of murkwood blocks, and each fish has different time, lake/river, bait shallow/deep requirement too much time spent for early steps

Not bad
But formatting shd better.
Also newbies wont get your [C>C>B>A] things - explanation at 1st part is needed

Safety notes are also needed:
Place for settlement selection
Claim
Teraforming
Palisade building
Locks and keys.

That may conclude 1st day of playing

We did.
But okay we are here from w6 or w7 so we have a general idea of what shd be done.

Anyways. Stress on safety in 'first hours' guide can at least give a correct message to a player.
Which is:
"Build claim and pali asap. Or be ready to get wiped"
"After pali build bwall asap. Before bwall is dried you are a free frag"

In case you haven't built a palisade since early world, the cornerpost requirements had leather added to them after a couple weeks. You don't get leather on your first day. Or the second day for that matter.

If you hurry up with your settlement and get busy snagging rabbits you do. Eight hours to dry a rabbit, eight hours for it to process from a hide to leather. That gives you about eight hours to screw around getting a claim up and buy the skills to make leather. I do understand this is aimed at new players, though, so most likely no, they won't have leather on the first day or two.

Good checklist for people that have played, but don't know a good order of actions to level up quickly. Otherwise, this guide is really too sparse for completely new players, as there just aren't enough details. It's assuming that the player already knows how to play the game. My opinion is that getting farming started first is going to be 10x more important than mining if the person is playing by theirself. There's nothing wrong with the early hunt for ore, but between the food and bats, it's just not practical.

I'll also note on fishing: bait variety is best. I've not got a comprehensive list, and a couple were started on the forum, but none are complete. The one thing that should be noted is that no one bait catches all fish types. I'm assuming this is the point of "fishing for LP" section for the discovery LP.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

I feel the early game is the best part of this game and only that. Everything else is so fucking grindy is ridiculous.

Alas; Great guide I will be sure to use it when the world starts.

Remind people to make all the wooden symbel items, since each gives some LP when crafted.
Total misplay.

I have faint memory that I tried doing that, and didn't get any LP. That would sound intended since the symbel aren't actually used to craft anything as far as I know. However feasting with only basic table/chair and wooden symbel is still better than plain eating.
