Troll's rarity

Postby LightingCubed » Tue Mar 22, 2016 2:10 pm

Hey there.
Old wiki says that chance to dig out a troll is 1/500 at lvl1.
We've digged around 2000 tiles.
Its 98% chance to dig one already!
Image
Odds to dig him out should be increasing with depth, right?(We decided to dig at lvl3)
Do they spawn only when you mine ore or mine unsupported?

It's about 0.002% chance of respawn from each mining grid.

I don't even know if this is accurate, but if it is, it's not a 1 in 500 chance, but a 1 in 50,000 chance. I know that in the countless tiles I have mined I have only ever encountered one troll in all the time I've played Haven.

Doesn't sound promising

are we even sure what "mining grid" means here? we're assuming it to be a tile but maybe it's referring to the 11x11 chunks (or whatever dimensions they were) or maybe even 1/500 100x100 minimaps. i never saw one in legacy despite mining thousands of tiles.

That math doesn't look quite right... and I can't find my probabilities text book.

edit: eh... I'm probably still sleepy and just thinking about it wrong. never mind me.

I am pretty sure that math is right.
Its just RNG being a faggot :c
P.S.
Chance that tile has a troll: 1/500
Chance that tile has no troll: 499/500

(499/500)^n : probalility of not finding a troll after mining N tiles.
so 1 - (499/500)^n gives us a value that we need.
If i am wrong, correct me

1/500 sounds way off.
In legacy we had 1 troll per 3 (or was it 4?) map grids on average.

Am I being ignored? The wiki doesn't say 1 in 500, or 0.2%. It says 0.002%, which means 1 in 50,000.

seems consistent with romovs' experiences.
