Block the Animal across the river with boats (making sure it doesn't aggro you and destroy boats) also make sure the animal can't run out of the boat block. Shift + B normally helps to see hit boxes.

Shoot the bastard from the other side of the river with a bow

Hunting early game made ez

Enjoy feasting on many animals.

Start with a single ant to learn the combat system by try&error or read through viewtopic.php?p=560909#p560909

Unfortunately you can't catch fleeing animals without a horse anyway, except for boars.

How about you just shoot them a second time?

if u are using 3rd speed u can quickly finish badger or fox too and with 4rd speed u can catch aurochs and deers too.
btw who told u to make em run away? u can use small damage attack and finish with high damage attack isntead of doing high damage attack first and leaving it with 10% of hp, which makes em run away and even if they do run away from you just build a trap.

1. Hit them with your arrow.
2. If they aren't dead - ASAP, exit the combat and start moving in opposite side till it disapers from your radar.
3. Wait for 3 seconds.
4. Chase it and hit with your second arrow.
5. Repeat 2-4 until it is dead.

Good simple advise. Some note: this is assume animal can not get to you when doing first shot. If you walk near large animal it will attack after first hit and knocking you out. Do this first shot from boat where animal can not reach (do noting animal can hit some 3 tiles away from itself, so staying far from shoes for safety). Animal will run to shore for trying attacks at you. Second shot will send them to flee and this is where step 1 above is beginning. Next shots will making animal flee always, so chase on land is safety for you. This is not true for bear which will stop fleeing at some low hitpoint value. You can use this technique to kill bear, but depending on damage of you it may knocking you out some 0-2 times for it. Better to blocking bear in for kills. Also probably will mention even if obvious, this is not working on mammoth/troll animal.
