How to Hunt?

Postby MachineLegend » Thu Sep 22, 2016 4:05 am

Hi! I'm not exactly a new player, but so far all I've done in Hafen is be a cook in a Village, I recently started a small hermitage with my friend and we've reached the point where we could use some more bones, meat, etc. So how exactly do you go about hunting animals?
Is this the real life?
Or is it fantasy?
Caught in a landslide...
No escape from reality...

Well normally I'd link you to Sevenless' guide to hunting but all of that is useless now with the updated combat system that just launched today, so really we're all learning quite a bit at this point. You can take a gander at the most recent announcements topic to see what it's like but there most likely won't be a comprehensive guide to it until much later, give or take a couple/few months.

For now, I'd recommend bow-hunting from a boat. Get the highest quality string you can from foraging and up your marksmanship and carpentry to 20 each, then craft your bow and arrows. Hunt until you get some high quality hide and bones, then turn that hide into straps and bone into arrows to create higher quality equipment. Repeat ad-infinitum until you get metal, then dabble in melee combat with armor/swords.

I understood that currently "defences" are kind of just renamed and you use them AFTER you're attacked with move of a same color.

Depending on how you think of it, this makes more sense or less sense than previous system. Old system would "realistically" be you avoiding all the incoming attacks. Now you react to attacks so you don't get overpowered.

1. Find animal

2. Kill animal
Really nobody knows how this new combat system fully works yet, so I'd give it a bit of time before trying to hunt right now. Let the beginner's guide get updated and wait for a new combat guide to come out.

Have someone else with you or a secondary disposable account.

You're gonna need 4 boats - 2 for yourself, 2 for another character. Aggro an animal from the shore. Trap with boats using second character. Be sure not to stay in one of those boats if you're trapping a boar, badger or a bear. Throw a few stones, finish off with UA attacks.

With 4 empty boats and 2 inventories you can easily take 10-11 animals on one go. Fill boats with large chests and sky is the limit.
Care with bears as they will start fighting again when low on HP so you might have to finish it off with a sling/bow

This is the safest and the quickest way.

wrong...
1. Too complicated for hermit. Need to have 2 clients running, too much micromanagement, animals can re-aggro on blocking char, etc...
2. Too complicated for pro-player. Building a knarr will provide more benefits with less efforts.

This "suggestion" was suitable for w5-6... but game is growing up, and you need too...

Short answer ; Get a horse. The odds of you killing a critter go way up if you're on a horse.

Then, the only critters that are not near-guaranteed kills are Lynx and Mammoth. Those two can match speed or outrun a horse. Also, a Mammoth now nearly requires more than one hunter to kill.

To cross rivers, carry a boat with a raft in it. Another way over many rivers (while on a horse) is to build a road across it (if you can Swim it).

This is how I hunt personally, but I want to address your comment here.
This is a silly way to respond to someone giving an advice. Looking through your message history I can see the pattern though. A lot of negativity and zero useful content.

Doing it my my way gets you 8-12 animals per trip. Each trip would take 20-30 minutes depending on how fast you can kill an animal. Time you spend chasing is definitely greater than setting up the trap and switching between the windows.
From my experience, setting up a trap takes about 20 to 30 seconds.

Your comments are really besides the point here.

Strike out and catch some squirrels, rabbits, or hedgehogs if you don't care about q.

Another easy thing to do, if q isn't a huuuge deal and/or you have a lot of time, there's also a chicken coop.

High q is best done by hunting large game, though.
