Yea, I've been wondering that myself too. That's what it says on the wiki, so I'm not sure how he got a wretched gore from a badger. And I don't believe that any other wound will progress into that.
A large enough hit from anything can cause a wretched gore. Bears, badgers, and lynx (and larger, of course) can cause them if you're not armored. Also, several smaller wounds can compound into one much worse wound if I remember a statement from jorb correctly (I'd have to dig to double check that).
There are better options for healing it.
Ancient Roots are great if you can get them. Better quality medical items increase the rate of healing by their multiplier, so q90 would heal 3 HHP a day vs just 1 for q10.
If you're just starting out again, there's no shame in shelving the character and starting a new one. Then again, there's challenge in soldiering on and seeing how far you can push things. That's a lot of penalty for a fresh spawn with no real attribute increases.
edit: oops, but in wrong resource item. I put in "heartwood leaves," and it should be "ancient root."
