Because if it works that way (and the levels are kept) then suicide after each credo is really a no-brainier...
I started this world after credos were implemented, so I've been suiciding frequently since I don't really give a shit about quality in my crappy hermitage... and...
It actually seems even "better" than that. It seems like the inheritance counts the points from the credo, and then the points from the credo are added again - meaning you can actually kill yourself and (slightly) raise certain stats. I told J&L but they didn't respond

Its actually slightly irritating because now I have much higher strength than other stats, but of course they are all so low its not a big deal.

This is without burying the body yet! After burial, several other skills related to credo bonuses were also (slightly) improved on the descendant relative to the ancestor.
