Why does my merchant's robe say "Memories of pain" on the hover over tool tip?

Merchant's robe

It's added to the item you make while using a spinning wheel and get the xp event "Pricked by the Spindle". Any item made with that string will carry over the tooltip. Theoretically almost any item could have it - ie string>rope>potters wheel>tree pot>tree>saw etc

No actual game play effect though.

I have a theory that the devs implemented it as a way of giving them some idea of how "developed" the world is. Because as the world advances, more and more things will (theoretically) have the memories of pain.

Why do memories of pain find their way into a potters wheel anyway? Do people actually have wool or silk at qualities better than their flax?

People do it deliberately, it only has to be the first rope into the first potter's wheel that has it and then your trees get it and so on and early on it makes little difference what quality that rope is and it is only one out of 10 strands anyway.

Why would you anyone do that deliberately? It's so unsightly. I actually opted for buying a lower quality saw at CF because it didn't have memories of pain. Also not using tree pots I baked in kiln at CF even though they're better than the ones I'm using, because I didn't know the kiln has memories of pain :(

the same reason you do the opposite deliberately.

A good "opposite" to doing something deliberately, is not worrying about it.
