Stats for Bow Hunting

Postby Jimmehwat » Tue Mar 20, 2018 3:05 am

I'm fairly new to the game, not yet to steel. According to the wiki, I should have the stats to reliably kill deer with a bow. Here's what I got:

38 Perception
22 Marksmanship
32q Bow
20q Metal arrows

The wiki says I need less than this to "reliably one-shot a deer", but I have trouble hitting it in the first place, and when I do it doesn't die or even flee. I'm guessing the wiki is outdated, but does anyone know what I should have for bow hunting? Or anything I could be doing wrong? I'm waiting for the bar to fill up as much as possible and standing only a few tiles from the deer.

Thanks!

How much damage are you doing to the deer?
Of another era.

Yeah I guessed that. I was mainly looking for a cheap way to get leather fast, and the stats on the wiki seemed attainable. Should I just cut my losses?

I think all my archery stats and equipment are similar or a bit better than what you listed, except that I'm using stone instead of metal arrows. I can't reliably one-shot even foxes.

Cheap, fast leather is the fast chasing of rabbits and squirrels, hedgehogs if you don't mind getting quilled. Look for animals others have left lying dead in a field or forest, abandoned settlements with unbutchered cattle... there's better ways to get leather than with archery.

Could use help getting it up to date. Be a friend and write up a good article.

That clears some things up. It seems like damage is highly random from that formula for minimum damage, like 25% of max to max.

Thanks a lot for the help everyone!

There are 2 ways to safely hunt with bows with low stats and equips.
First one is taking the animal to a palisaded cliff, either let it chase you or use a rope and a clover.
Then sit on the cliff and shoot arrows on it before it breaks the palisade.

the other way is to be 2 people get some horses (clover horses are fine).
The one with a bow Aims at one location, the other person will then run around in circles with the animal chasing them and walk past that location.
Once the animal get there you shoot with a fully charged shoot, most animals will start running away after they take too much damage, so think of that.

There is a 3rd option, If you have good enough bow, arrows, perception and marksmanship you can one shoot these animals.
Foxes, Badgers, Dears, wolverines.

But not Moses, bears, lynx, walruses, mammoths, trolls, boars or horses.

I have not tried it on otters, beavers, swans or anything i have missed.
