Abyss Gazer impossible??

So I'm trying to do the fisherman credo. I've been to about 13 water spots in caves and countless fishing nodes. I've caught every fish but the abyss gazer. I literally haven't even seen him as a possibility. I've used woodfish and poppy wobblers all times. I've asked a more experienced player and he said they don't even exist in the game. Is this right, or am I just doing something wrong? I started the credo, "Catch abyss gazer" was my first quest, so I lost out on 30k LP by abandoning that and restarting... now I'm on the 2nd quest and it's asking me to roast an abyss gazer filet. I'm never going to escape this 'Abyss Gazer' so I figured I'd seek out the community's answer.

Like I said, I tried a bunch of different lures/hooks/fishing lines. I just want proof they're possible to catch at cave level 1. Otherwise I'm just going to give up on the fisherman credo at this point.

you can use nets too btw

Worth noting using fresh bait in an area can get you different fish than if you use lures. It's a bit more random and harder to figure out what's where, but it might be a help to finding what you're after.

Edit: Just tried to use a net in the cave water, didn't get anything after 2 hours.

Can confirm that you can catch them on level one, I caught mine with worms in a shallow cave lake. Good luck!

Nets are better left longer than 2 hrs btw, I haven't worked out exact timing but I collect from mine the following day (rl day) they are always full, this is from an above ground fishing node though, I haven't bothered placing one in a cave lake/river.

Thanks for this informative answer. I appreciate it. I'll try leaving the net overnight and checking on it in the morning. Also if that doesn't end up producing any results then I'll try with worms. Thanks! (Also using worms on a bushcraft rod, right?)
