What's the difference between gate and visitor gate?

I don't know which one I'm supposed to build for my palisade.

You should have at least one of each.
Visitor gates give other people the visitor debuff if they enter them, so they are harmless if they enter through it. But no one in combat can enter the gate. So if you are being chased in combat, you also cannot enter the gate.

The normal gate does not give the visitor debuff, so anyone that enters it can freely steal and destroy everything. It should ideally only be used in emergencies or if you feel 100% safe in going out and immediately closing it behind you.

best case: build an airlock with the inner gate being visitor, and the outer gate regular. this way if you've entered combat you can at least run behind a gate without risking someone slipping through without the visitor debuff.

If you do this you'll actually get yourself stuck in the airlock if the attacker maintains combat with you, since you won't be able to go through the visitor gate unless you both peace out.

the answer to that would be a house inside the airlock.

Perhaps your illustration should portray that rather than a deathtrap.

Would you rather bum around outside with the xd gangs? better one than five, better none than one.

this seems like a better approach to deal with your issue (correct me if i'm forgetting about something), where the inner regular gate would always stay closed, until someone is trapped there. outer visitor gate not required but could be useful.

green: visitor gate
red: regular gate

Not sure which to build, but thanks. Also would it be totally unnecessary to have a gate on each wall of a 50x50 area?
