No, slave keys can still lock the gate from the outside. They just can't open it.

Teleport back to your hearth fire. As someone said above, A -> H-> H (Adventure menu, Haven & Hearth sub-menu, Travel to your hearth fire).

How does the game detect which direction is inside and which is outside?

When placing the door you can decide that.

About that, can anyone please tell me which way the gate should be going for it to point outside? I don't want to fuck up my gate.

For anyone else wondering, the palisade gate has to be going outward.
