Yeah you can only use coal. I finally got my alt to my old camp to find my tar kiln finally finished and was able to start my smelter with a surface boulder of bloodstone and casserite and got 9 metal bars (though not on my main so I guess my alt will be my metal worker for now) not sure on the rest, I haven't had much luck mining yet.

Made some rustroot extract, on one of the uses it told that granite is directly below. I thought it only tells you about metal ore. Or maybe there is some use for granite i don't know about?
edit: nevermind, i guess it just tells about anything that is below you now

if you have a cave you're mining out of, you can use it to see where the closest ore is if you're not having any luck just chipping out walls. Just remember you need to use it on the surface.

Anyone know if you can block a minehole with signposts like you could from legacy. People couldn't come up and would get an error message. Doing some planning and such so quick answer would be super :)

Hmm so I was able to mine in a location last few days, and when I went to mine today It says the area is too hard... I've only gained str since I could mine the same area before... bug? Did I somehow have a buff other than cape and necklace...? I don't think so, so confused. :(

Edit -------------------

After some thought I realized there was a cave-in recently in this area... could that have made the stone harder to mine?

Each rock type has its own hardness. Cave in tiles have a higher base hardness than most stones on L1. This interacts with the local hardness nodes such that a mineable soft stone may become an un-mineable cave in tile.

Or you are currently healing wounds with gauze or poultic, which gives debuffs to strength.
