I got some high perc*exp and Survival, so I get quite a good share of dandelions, clovers, blueberries, etc. that are good q into it. If you just give animal the junk, it's going to lower their quality. Raise both your Farming with your
Survival as that will give you a free supply of free animal fodder.

should be able to feed them apple cores and entrails.

As is, unless they changed it since my report, any item you character can eat was food for them. Includes raw meat and ant forageables lol.
