If you're trying to mine out an ore node it's very much worth it to build supports to allow you to safely dig. Also, if you're mining in a straight line, one cave in can completely block the path and lead to chain cave-ins if you try to clear out the new walls it drops and you're unlucky. The further from a cave path that you are, the more valuable supports are.

Sort of. See, if you're mining supportless and you get a cave in, if you clear the exact same set of tiles minus the one that caved in, you get no more cave ins. The tile itself holds the cave in information, not whether or not it has rock. This is also why if you hit a cave in tile, but don't clear that tile (the cave in missed it), you can hit trouble. If you mine past it and ANOTHER cave in fills that cave in tile, you go back to clear and hit the same cave in again.

Prospect tunneling wise it's pretty safe, I have huge issues hitting hardness veins so I can't go far with S12 pick and 74 str on L1. It's mining out larger areas that supports make much less hassle. Also occasionally you'll get overlapping unstable tiles, and I'll drop a wooden support to get me through that part of the tunnel.

It's easy to mark the tiles and sure you cant go staight forever, but usaly it's enough to dig two tiles in the perpendicular direction and than you can dig further.
I'v just finished digging out two iron ochre veins without supports and i do think that building them would be a waste, I only had to avoid one cave-in tile.

As for marking tiles, it's very easy ;] Just put 1x1 landsurvey every time you dig dust tile.

Yes, it's indicating that there's at least one cave-in tile.

Instant cave in of anything that the support 'prevented'. Interesting experience, also good grief material cause most supports are off claims and not attended 24/7 :D

So this happened my first tile in :x I have had terrible luck mining. I think some basic wooden supports built from simply blocks would be really helpful early game. Even if the radius is half or worse than the cheapest one right now.

Question - So cave ins take all my shp - can I just keep mining and it will only take shp again? Or will It start to take hhp? Don't really want to test it with this char :?

K thanks chiprel :)

So one more question to clarify - So If I mine out a tile and it Doesn't show gravel falling graphic, then any tile touching that tile(even diagonal) should be safe?
