i might also add that these crop (and i guess tree) quality changes differ for each type of crop. one moment might be opportune for planting carrots, but not for onions, etc.

Someone claimed that they had a farm at the intersection of four map grids. He test-planted on every grid and then planted on whichever got the best results in quality. So I think it's not 300x300, but rather a grid?
To avoid too much hassle with farming, I just plant most crops normally after harvesting, and hope they come out better.
For long growing plants, like pumpkins, grapes, peas, hops and peppers, I have 3 sections of each and plant them in intervals of ~12 hours, and then replant the best one.

Also, add branch quality to silkfarming - I believe they affect the quality of silk threads. So you'll need better axe for splitting too.

High quality moths can give a jump start to silk quality, I've found several locations with 30q moths.

I've heard 5 hours and 5 minutes for crop quality changes. I don't believe either are true. My guess is around 15 minutes. Getting the area to despawn probably would help by logging off or staying inside.

The 5 hours in question is probably the time required to drastically change the quality from original; it changes marginally in smaller intervals. They made it so they don't change within minutes to prevent this jumble in qualities when planting larger fields. Or so I think.

What jorb stated is pretty much true on the time and space. However, he shortly after posting that said that even a few minutes can change a point in quality up or down, and even just a few tiles. The time and space values are for a new psuedorandom adjustment value. Unless you have a very active village where someone can come and test every hour or two, I'd just farm the majority of my crops and keep a very small sample for quality adjusting you can plant one or two seeds per crop a day.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

when i plant a small field, 10x10 or under, i often have a 1point variance across all 3 qualities. and that's from the same pile of seeds (often a bucket) and the point variance is random as in not all have the point difference after a certain point but like 1 in 10.

doubt this contributes a lot as i'm a hermit and haven't done any large fields for !!science!!
