If you die you can make a new character and in the character creation room you go to the graveyard. Select the tombstone of the deceased character you're inheriting from in order to receive ownership of their properties and to spawn at the last location of their hearthfire when you finish character creation and spawn back into the world. You'll immediately get back 30% of your ancestor's stats. You may then build a grave cairn and bury their body for an additive 20% and their skull for an additional additive 10%. In total you can get 60% of their stats back.
