There are pros and cons to both orientations. In the past you basically HAD to build your brickwall outside your palisade.

Weigh the pros and cons and see what makes the most sense in your case. If you are far away from other players or haven't had anyone attack you/vandalize your stuff, you might not need to worry about someone trying to bash it while its drying.

one day of palisade building VS weeks of slaving at the anvil. easy choice imo.:)
