Cant fish!?

I feel like a fool.
I tried to equip the fishing pole without emptying my hands,
and when it didn't work I assumed the fishing rod had to be in my inventory.

Don't feel like a fool because you did the right thing and asked a question in the section of the forum dedicated for such questions. This game is not really intuitive, it's ok to get confused now and then.

guess that a "hand" icon on the character sheet could be useful for that.

Usually in other games you can just hold an item and swap it in your hand.
