Obviously I can kill animals without them running with reasonable stats and/or items, but this was in reply to granger saying that he should learn the (melee) combat system vs an ant, when a simple bow provides much more efficacy for a brand new player. In addition to having the stats to overpower the animal and learning the combat system, you need to be able to learn when it runs so you can avoid that, which generally also requires more stats that the bare minimum to make it flee.

I think the combat system is useful to learn, but not useful for a hunting [as a new player]. The boat blocking system, especially with an alt, is by far the easiest and most efficient method for a new character.

Never used boat blocking on hunting and killed my first bear at 3h world age. (2.5 of that time was to find a spot for my base). Never understood that blocking thing - do someone think that bringing an alt to 'bear-spotted-spot' is less time consuming, than hit-wait-chase-hitagain?

Since the OP didn't state anything about gear, stats and abilities the advice I gave is sound:
Either try on critters that won't kill you, or read about it.

I think stating the fact that it doesn't know how to hunt or what to hunt is reason enough to believe he isn't advanced and would die to a simple fox in a 1v1, players who have advanced enough to get other gear obviously have done hunting before but seeing as he has no hunting experience, how could you possibly think he had more than just a roundpole fence, tsk tsk tsk Granger.

@Glorthan
Thanks for backing up my point on boat hunting for new/noob players.

Hit chase is a huuuuuuuuuuuuge waste of time seriously. I usually brought 3 alts and 3 boats because I would port back with 6 animals back then. Boat block is the best way for beginners.

who needs more than one arrow to kill an animal? or did you mean mammoth? because for em yeah, like 4 arrows could be needed, btw there are easier ways too, why should i spent half of hour chasing an animal?

yeah good during early world too, but takes lots of time, could just use cliff and make running animal bounce between you and the cliff (the more round it is the better) and if it isnt round enough putting few stick piles on the ground doesnt take that much time and work.

Maybe, the person who asks how to hunt on forum may need more than one arrow to hunt?
