You would need to position your structures kind of like this so you can light a branch at the fire and still be able to move towards an oven/smelter/whatever without your path being obstructed:

X = Oven
O = Fire pit

X      X
X  O  X
X      X

If we're aiming for a perfect setup to light multiple ovens/smelters with a single firebrand or without the annoyment of equipping a lit torch, this would be it:

Yeah I do agree there are plenty of better options than what I have suggested but unfortunately if you're just lighting via branches and going from fire to oven with that firebrand it's not likely you'll end up lighting more than one or two at the most in a single attempt due to the random timer. Sometimes you get lucky and it lasts awhile but not usually.

Tar kilns aren't hard to make. Burning pine blocks or other coniferous tree will yield plenty of tar.

Well, there is that small chance you'll get one that lasts long enough it turns into an Everlasting Firebrand.

Yeah I think he meant one of those except I'm not sure it lasts forever, they do go out eventually. Either way though my point was that if you're lighting using branches (ie. firebrands) as soon as you light the first oven you need to also light the rest before it goes out to continue the movement pattern.

Otherwise if you say only light half you have to go back to where you put the fire and light a new one and if you don't use a client that can hide a cursor item so you can move with it chances are you won't be able to move directly to the next oven to light it. There's also the probable chance that your firebrand will go out before getting to that next one. That is why I recommend the fire be in a spot where you can light and move directly to what you want to light.
